Well the three little ones seem to be settling in nicely. DJ is enjoying chatting with me and has started calling me if I leave the room!
They're exploring their cages more and starting to play with toys.
All three eat well and will eat just about anything I put in the cage. Tonight they get veggies for the first time since arriving! DJ really loves his nutriberries (garden Veggie and sunny orchard) and his avicakes. And all three love their cornbread for breakfast. I think Linda spoiled them even worse than I am!
I am glad Linda talked me into taking 3 of them.

They are happy birds and I guess you can say I spoiled all of them just a little bit!!! Their level of fear is low, as they've not had anything to be afraid of. :)

DJ is doing his best to get the other two wound up. He's turning into the ringleader.

DJ almost slept on his top perch last night. He stayed up there for awhile looking like he was going to sleep, but after about 10 minutes he went back to sleeping in the food dish. He want's to make sure nobody steals his food!
Z28Taxman
07-16-2016, 01:36 PM
They're getting even happier. I gave DJ a piƱata last night and today he's playing with it and the other 2 started playing with theirs last night (they had it since last Saturday).
They've also eaten their nutrigreens with the birdy bread.
They didn't eat the veggies last night but they did investigate them and I did see DJ and Opie pick at the carrots.
Today they've discovered that the cages are large enough to really fly in. They're having a blast flying around.
Z28Taxman
07-17-2016, 04:46 PM
Today they were mostly quiet until a bit after 4. After putting their veggies in the cage and giving fresh water they all decided to race. They'd fly to the bottom of the cages and race to the top. At least until DJ decided it was bath time and the Cinnamon in the other cage decided that looked like fun and dove in his water dish too.

Ok they get very wound up when I come home from work.
DJ hasn't repeated his step on my wrist that he did last week. I tried again holding a nutriberry in my hand but he went up on the perch and yelled at me. He is eating lots of avi-cakes and fruit nutriberries though.
For the first time I have seen them, both of the pair are swinging on their coconut together.
DJ has found his carrots and is enjoying himself.
Z28Taxman
07-19-2016, 04:45 PM
The pair have been in the nutriberry bowl today. They've been mostly ignoring that bowl but I found some of the berries on the ground. DJ nearly emptied his. He loves his nutriberries.
I've also discovered a sure fire way to get them to go nuts and chatter up a storm. Try and take a nap on the couch.

They've been trained well before they left Florida!!!!!!!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Tonight when I came home and gave them their veggies, DJ went right at them. He hasn't eaten any peas yet just the carrots but I'm guessing it's only a matter of time!
The other two haven't touched them yet but they do love the sunny orchard nutriberries.
DJ did try and give me a heart attack when I walked in the door. I looked at the cage and didn't see him. I could hear 3 birds but his cage looked empty. Then he moved and I saw him on the lower perch next to his ladder. He's been going down there then jumping down to the grate, running laps and climbing up to the top of the cage. He's certainly not a perch potato.

DJ truly will eat anything that doesn't eat him first. He's been nibbling at the zupreem pellets I put in there too.:happy:
By the way. In dim light, a blue bird, in a blue cage is nearly invisible!:rofl: I could hear him in there crunching away this morning but couldn't see him. It wasn't until he lifted his light colored head out of the food dish that I could see him.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Now you know why 99% of my cages are white!!! I'm surprised that DJ sampled the Zupreem pellets. If they are non-colored, he's seen those kind of pellets but I don't use colored ones so he's quite the adventurous lovie! Eating food has never been a problem anywhere in my aviary. Like you said, most will eat anything that doesn't try to eat them back!

These are colored, yellow, orange red and green. He has been eating them. Not a lot but I saw him eat them last night. I think the peas got nibbled on too!
Yep, he's definitely eating them. I see them in with the seeds and cornbread now. Everybirdy is wet too!
Gave them popcorn nutriberries for the first time tonight and DJ went right to it.
Z28Taxman
07-23-2016, 08:24 AM
DJ ate a lot of those pellets yesterday. There truly seems to be nothing he won't eat. Today he gets to try broccoli.

He eats almost as much as the other two put together. He's a growing boy! And a happy one. He's been playing with all his toys today.:happy:
He seems to be picky about where his food is. The millet has been on the left side of the cage for a week and he didn't touch it. I moved it to the right side and he went right at it.
Z28Taxman
07-24-2016, 09:19 AM
Well I guess I can officially declare that DJ will indeed eat anything that doesn't bite him first.
I gave him broccoli last night for the first time and he ate it. He also ate sugar snap peas and his shredded carrots.:happy:
linda040899
07-24-2016, 11:26 AM
Too funny! Believe it or not, age has a lot to do with willingness to try new things. It's a well known fact that if birds don't learn how to fly as babies, they won't learn as adults. That's why I don't clip flight feathers, if I have to, before a bird can fly well.

They aren't afraid of the vacuum cleaner either. Just ceiling fans.
linda040899
07-24-2016, 11:55 AM
They all know what vacuum cleaners are and DJ should know what a ceiling fan is. Color might make a difference for DJ. My bedroom one is white.
Z28Taxman
07-24-2016, 03:04 PM
DJ didn't freak out about the fan until the others did. This ceiling fan is wood. Oak colored.

07-24-2016, 04:10 PM
lacey isn't afraid of the ceiling fan at all, i wish she was! She is totally afraid of the red and black 2 wheel dolly we used when we moved in here. It's not that big but for whatever reason is sends her screaming and sound the alert for 10 minutes after i put it back in the closet. I have NO clue why it sets her off lol. With gizmo, it's the broom... so i'm guessing stick training if it's at all possible won't be with a broom handle lol

I put DJ's millet back on the left side of the cage (the right side was kind of crowded with the water, avi-cake/nutriberry and veggie bowls on that side. And he went over to it and ate some. It had been over there for a week and a half and he refused to even look at it. Moving it yesterday reminded him how tasty it is so he had to go get it.

DJ slept on a perch last night instead of his food dish!

While I can't touch them, they do get excited and chatty when I get home. They do talk to me.
DJ is absolutely ecstatic when he gets his veggies! He's climbing all around the cage with a carrot in his beak!
linda040899
07-26-2016, 10:02 AM
With the pair, that may be all you get but you never know. I've had Ginger since 1991 and she still growls if I have to touch her or pick her up! I can picture you with 3 lovebirds climbing all over you! :D:D:D

Opie is ok with me being close, he'll even come closer sometimes. the other one is content to play peek a boo from behind the pinata.

I think you will win at least one of them over! It's hard to be afraid of someone who provides a mansion for a home and gives them all sorts of good food!!! :lol

Opie left me put a nutriberry next in the food dish next to him while he was eating so we're getting there.

Tonight when I came home DJ started doing quiet budgie sounding chatter. Until he saw the veggies. Then he was too excited and started at full volume!

The pair have decided on a way to let me know they're out of millet. They throw the millet holder to the ground.
Again today, I gave DJ his veggies and he was the happiest bird on the planet. He had to eat some of each. He really likes broccoli!

DJ will now take carrots from my fingers through the cage bars. He also will come over to me when I stand near the cage and talk to him.
ANd when I get home from work he gets all exited. I think I'm part of his flock now.

DJ was easy because he acted just like Ditto as soon as he went in the cage.
Opie was easy because it was short for Opaline.
Otis was the tough one.
Z28Taxman
08-05-2016, 05:41 PM
I think Ditto really has possessed DJ.
The last 3 days when I got home the bowl with nutribberries and avicakes was almost empty. Everything was on the grate. Half eaten nutiberries everywhere!
Z28Taxman
08-30-2016, 05:51 PM
Well I found one of Ditto's habits that these 3 don't share. I was able to actually have a phone conversation without any screaming. Ditto would scream his head off until I hung up the phone. These guys stayed quiet until I hung up. Now they're chittering away!

Well the O's now have some very long primariy flight feathers and DJ is showing some flights too. Looks like they will be flying soon.

They're growing fast. Last weekend there were no flights visible when his wings were folded. Now I can see them sticking out from across the room. He'll be flying in no time.

At that point, you will be in trouble!!!! Alex, my Amazon, will fly to me and land with a thump, although she lands quite expertly if I hold up my hand. Her flight ability is beyond amazing!

Today at nap time, he went into the happy hut for a bout an hour and a half, while Otis and Opie snuggled on the corner perch. that's the first time I've seen him nap in the hut. Usually just goes in there to play for a few minutes.

Some progress in the other cage. I'm sitting here at the desk and DJ is in the veggie bowl tearing them up.
Then I see Opie sneak up on them from a perch that is below the his veggie bowl. Stand up tall and grab a carrot. Then he went for some broccoli.

I decided to listen to some music today so I put on Guns and Roses. Now DJ thinks he's Axl Rose. He was screeching and dancing right along with him. Of course that got the other two going and I had a live concert! :rotfl
I had to put on some Trace Adkins to calm them down.:rofl:

At my place, you would need ear protection!! It's amazing just how piercing parrot tones can be!! Even hatchling lovebirds are capable of producing enough sound to be hear roughly 2 feet away from the nest even if the noise level isn't silent!

I don't even want to think about how loud it would be there. these three are anough.
I did open the cage to let DJ come out on saturday but he didn't leave. He walked out on his balcony chirped then went back inside.
He stood there looking at me but when I came over he went back in.
I did get opie to nibble on my finger the other day though.
Z28Taxman
09-26-2016, 02:20 PM
Yesterday I tried a little experiment. I left the balcony to DJ's cage open while cleaning it. when I went to the bathroom to clean the bottom grate he would climb out on the balcony, and Opie and Otis would start yelling at him, he'd **** back and run back in the cage. Not once did he try to go anywhere. He'd just hang out on the balcony until the other two noticed and yelled at him.
I can leave opie and otis's cage open all day and they won't even bother going near the door. They're perfectly content in the cage. Why not, their food and coconut shell are in there. Who needs anything else.

I find that my lovebirds will warn me if something is not the way it's supposed to be! Let a lovebird escape from a cage and the entire aviary lets me know! Funny thing, too. Once a bird escapes, it tends to stay near where it belongs. I rarely find anyone on the opposite side of the aviary.
Chewy, my Quaker, doesn't like to come out of his cage on his own. Could be because Alex, BFA, likes to hang out in that area.........

He took over almost as soon as they got here. They will be minding their own business in their cage and he'll look right at them and start chirping and get everything going. He started that on the second day here.
