Duck breaks into Normal man's home

NORMAL -- When Steve Schneider got home from the gym
Friday night, he found shattered glass in the driveway
and a big hole in a picture window. "I cautiously put
down my gym bag and peeked through the front door," he
said. "There was this duck in my living room. It was just
sitting there."

He tried to lure the duck out the back door using bread
as bait, but the flustered fowl hit the ceiling, flying
through several rooms and into a clothes closet.

"When she spread her wings, she was big in my house,"
Schneider said, estimating a wing span of 2 1/2 to 3
feet. "I got a little closer and she started hissing at
me."

That's when he called for help.

"When I pulled up, I couldn't believe it," said Normal
Police Sgt. Dan Kelley. "But what can you expect for
Friday the 13th? The duck was sitting there happily upon
our arrival."

An animal control officer put a blanket over the bird's
head to put it into a cage. The officer said the bird
appeared to suffer only from scrapes to its bill and
would be returned to the wild.

"I was a little angry she pooped in my living room,"
Schneider said. But that did not last long.

"When all was said and done, she had a harder day than I
did."
