I've been told that lovebirds of both sexes can and do have dalliances with non-partners, but it is all about immediate gratification, and that the bird that strays almost always retains their closeness with the original lovebird to which it is bonded.
In human terms, I guess it would be like the husband who loves his wife dearly and would never willingly leave her, and yet also likes his bit of candy on the side as well... :omg:
In any case, this is just what I have been told by a couple of breeders. The closest I've had in my flock was when one of my hens (Zipper) took up with another male when I took the male she was bonded with out of her cage and put another male in - but the hen still pined for the original male when she wasn't ...er, "busy" with the 2nd male, and the first male kept trying to get back to her. In the end, I removed the 2nd male and put the first male back with Zipper, and it was like they'd never been seperated at all.

Hi....I'm Paulette from Missouri....Sorry you lost your quaker....do you have all of your birds in the same cage?.....(2 older lovies) and (1 male) and others? You could put the single male in a separate cage in the same room that way they can still communicate with each other. Are all of your birds paired up? Are the older bonded pair mating too? Are you pulling eggs to avoid breeding?
I know too many questions. Breeders will tell you hens really need to go through sitting on eggs. If you pull eggs you need to replace them with fake eggs to keep the hens from depleting their calcium levels by laying more to replace the ones removed. In nature when eggs are stolen or damaged they will replace them in order to have the species carry on. You prolly already know all this. So where is your rescue? Have you been doing it a long time? Some of us have been kicking around the idea.....please share your thoughts, ideas, criteria....etc. There are no shelters near where I live. The closest one is 3 hours away. When I adopt they drive one hour this way and I drive 2 their way.

I've had some pretty strange combinations so this does not surprise me at all. The older pair will remain bonded and the single male will eventually pair up with another unattached bird.

I don't have any real advice to offer but be on the lookout for a lovie devorce lawyer. That would mean trouble.

Jennie....I enjoyed visiting your site and reading about you and your birds....and I see you have a bazillion birds...and I would say you are much more experienced than I am....so... sorry about all the questions....your first post did not hint to your experience....but you could still give us some tips about running a rescue.....I can't imagine having that many birds flighted in the house....I have 4 baby zebra finches and I was cleaning out the container they are in....I had to put them in a different container as the larger babies were pushing the small baby out of the little nest basket.....anyway, the 3 big babies started flying around the room....I was able to grab 2, but didn't see where the 3rd one went.....continued cleaning out the container because it was getting quite rank.....finally got my daughter to come in and help me look....he was in the closet (I have curtains hanging in the doorway to the closet) and hadn't even looked in there....I was releived to find him....as I have a cat.....as last resort I was thinking I would just put food out for him....but he's so small he could sneak under the door to the bird room that I shut every night so the cat can't creep around the birds.....and day before yesterday I got out the 5 baby lovebirds, one is a bit smaller than the other 4....the 4 started flying all over the room and out the room.....I had to scoop them up and shut the door so the cat couldn't get them.....needless to say I had to give them a modified wing clip....and took them into the bathroom for a little training....and they were all so calm when we were away from the parents....what a difference that really makes.
