I have somehow aquired a rainbow lory from a friend who knows a friend that bought a lory and didnt realize they are "high maitenence". The bird was only born in July so it is still young and very friendly.

I have been doing some reading on them... ie the projectile poop! the nectar feedings and all that fun stuff that goes along with lory ownership. Does anyone else on here have any experience with them at all? Any good tips to keep in mind :)

I realize this is the lovebird forum..but I figured id ask!

My ex husband and I had a goldies lorikeet. Smaller, but still just as bad with the leakage. lol.

All I can suggest is always wear a towel when you have them out. Those cover capes always look so silly, but boy do I wish I had one when I had Atreides. :) Other than that, sounds like you have the nectar stuff down....

Oh, we got a plastic half cage cover for ours. It made it kind of a pain to open his door, but it was a life saver for our floors. I'd look into one of those. Definitely limits your walls and floors getting icky.

You may want to try and potty train him. i potty trained my love bird in a very short time, just a few days. He resisted on day three but now I just hold him over a paper towel and tell him to go poop , if he has one to do he will , if not i just check in 20 minutes. I also know that he poops immediately upon waking. i have noticed that lately he cheeps in my ear if he has to go. Unfortunately i can't tell it apart from the i want seed or i am tired cheep yet. I noticed on a lorie site that they are highly trainable and can be potty trained.

I know close to nothing about lorikeets, except that they are beautiful. Jeremy ( member name Jezz) might be able to help you with more info on the Lorikeets. Nicky also has a lori (wisojelly) but I haven't seen her on the board in ages.

One thing I learned today... is its better to house them in a giant rabbit cage with a deep dish over a traditional bird cage!... oh the things I learn on the internet :)

Oh -- I got to hold a young Goldie's when I was last @ Bird Paradise. They are GORGEOUS birds. I'd like to have one but I'm not sure about all the add'l care. The specialized diet is one thing... but projectile, near-liquid stool? Not so sure I can handle that :x I've read that lory poo is easier to clean up than regular bird poo but that seems unlikely.

There are a few lory/lorikeet sites on-line but I haven't *yet* found a lory-specific message board.

Lorikeets make wonderful pets. They are very affectionte birds, however, they can become attatched to just one owner.
They need a diet of fruits, vegetables, and a big bowl of either wet or dry lorikeet mix. Try and change the wet and dry mix around, so, give them wet mix 3 times a week, and dry mix 4 times a week. When you give them dry mix, make sure it is right next to a bowl of water because they like to dunk it in the water to make their own wet mix. Clever birds huh?:)

The liquid poos, not a problem. They actually are easy to clean up.
Would you rather clean up a bit of liquid or a full on land mine?:lol Sorry, i am just used to my baby Ringnecks, they are a lot bigger than Lovebirds and therefore, their droppings are a lot bigger:rofl:

They are very energetic little birds and if you like Green Cheek Conures, you will absolutely love Lorikeets. They are constantly laying on their back or hanging upside down, they are extemely comical birds and are always wanting your attention. Most of the time, you will think they have ADHD:lol

Oh, I love psittacula parrots, especially IRNs. It's illegal to own them in New Jersey, though

It is easier to clean up in the cage, but I never wanted to take Atreides out because it is NOT easier to clean up from your clothes and whatnot. lol
