Hi All,
Just wanted to share what I consider a miracle this morning.
I am at work, and a male sparrow flew into the glass window here. As always, they come get me when a bird is injured. Poor little guy was laying on his back, his breathing seemed very shallow. Sometimes, all I can do is hold the bird until it passes, but once in awhile a miracle happens, as it did this morning. This one just touched my heart though, and I wanted to share. I held this little sparrow close to my heart, cupped in my hands. I was looking into his eyes, and he into mine, and I prayed as I always do. I pray that they have the will to live, or for the Lord to take them as swiftly and painlessly as possible. This little sparrow stay cupped next to my chest for a good ten minutes, his gaze never leaving mine, then I felt his foot grip my finger. From past experiences I know this is a good sign, as a bird that is dying will put his legs out straight, and his feet will not grip at all. This little guy blinked at me, and I loosened my hold, he looked at me one last time and flew off.
It always amazes and touches my heart when a wild bird puts their trust in me. Sometimes the ending is not a happy one, but they always have someone holding them as they pass over to the Rainbow Bridge. Anyway, just wanted to share my miracle this morning. It's a good day:)

Thank you so much for sharing this, Lori!
It's so amazing that animals instinctively know that they are safe in an unfamiliar situation. Each day is a good one, even though events don't always go the way we would like them to go. Your message helped helped to brighten my day a bit.......... :)

I'm so glad that the little guy made it. He could sense that you were not a threat to him. Thanks for sharing, brightened up my day a bit, too. :)

What a sweet and uplifting story Lori. I'm glad the little sparrow made it. It's so sad to see a bird die in such a way, but the problem is one sometimes doesn't dare to pick an injured wild bird up because you're afraid to kill it from the shock, so I'm sure the sparrow sensed in some way the goodness of your heart and how much you were trying to help him. I'm a sucker for happy endings, so this story made my day :).
Hugs,

Awwww, mama bird Lori! Good for you...and for the little sparrow! Wild animals know when they aren't going to be harmed...it's incredible.
Perhaps the next thing they'll bring you are some abandoned eggies for you to sit on...

Gloria,
I know what you mean about being scared to death. They will actually have heart failure, and I was leary of picking him up, but to be honest, I did not really think he would make it. He was laying on his back when I got there, and did not appear to be breathing well, this is why I consider it a miracle.
I do feed these little sparrows at work, so perhaps he recognized me? Whatever the reason, I thank God he was alright. Just looking into his eyes, I lost my heart, and in the few minutes I held him, I loved him. I am a cry baby, but the people at work are used to me crying over the loss of life.
Just last Friday I buried the Beta we had at work. I called him Buddy, and he was such a sweet fish, as far as fish go. He died while I was at lunch, and thank goodness somebody had enough sense to stop them from flushing him. That I think would have upset me more. Every living thing deserves a proper burial.
I'm glad it touched you all as much as it did me. Just seeing the little guy fly away like that put a smile on my face for the rest of the day:)

Lori, I could use your help here when I'm trying to get a Carolina Wren out of my house and this is NOT a stunned bird! :D I've had one get in 3 or 4 times and I know that they can die of fright so trying to get it to land on the end of the broom so that I can take it out, ain't easy! Haven't scared one to death (yet) but it scares the poop out of me! :D
It is amazing how calm they are when they've been stunned by a window strike and are being cared for till they "come to" and are ready for release. My sister was able to help out a stunned little hummer last summer. She was besides herself and so relieved that it made it out and straight to her hummer feeder to load up on sugar water.
Good job, Lori!!! :)

They certainly do recognize people, especially those that feed them. The tree swallows that attacked me last year at my brother's house for getting too close to the nestbox, know my brother well. About an hour after they chased me off I went down there with him and they let us open the box to see the little ones. They just sat on a power wire above us watching. 8)
I'm sure that little sparrow won't forget you now.:grouphug1

What a lovely story, and it is so nice that it has a rare but happy ending.
I have a suggestion though.... Please print this out, the larger the better. I think you will know what to do with it.
Attention All Sparrows...
This is a sheet of glass. You cannot fly through it, so don't even try. You will hurt your head if you try to fly through it, and if the nice lady that holds hurt sparrows is not at work today, no one else will know what to do with you and your hurt head. Things may not go very well for you if you hurt your head on this window. Go fly somewhere else, and have a very nice day.
Thank you.

what a miracle. i hope more people will care for the wild animals out there.
on january 8, 2006 my sister was cleaning the feeders at our backyard at around 10pm, she came knocking on my door and told me there was a dove sitting on the snow near to the ground feeder. i knew something was wrong as it's so dark and cold outside, i went to prepare a cardboard box and grab a net (it meant to be for my fids in case of emergency) and went straight out to the backyard. i tried catching him a few times and he flew across the street so i ran after him crossing the street with the net and my pyjamas like a crazy woman when he saw me he flew back to my front yard so off i go again. i lost track of him but i knew he's hiding in some trees, i almost gave me but i told myself if i can't find him he will definitely die. i went back to the house to get a flashlight and to my suprise i found him and this time he let me catch him with the net (my sister said i propably exhausted him  ). i put him inside the box with a heating pad underneath for the rest of the night. first thing in the morning i drove him to the toronto wildlife centre and later found out he was hurt and that's a deep cut on his breast. the centre is giving him antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs and will be under their care for another 10 days or so.
i will have to call the centre back next week to see how he's doing, so please pray for him and hope for another miracle. i will have to pick him up if everything is ok and released him back to my backyard so he can be reunited with his friends, family and mate. let's hope for the best :grouphug1

Mimi,
That is awesome. I have taken a few birds to our wildlife rehab, Walden's Puddle. They are wonderful people, and they take such awesome care of the wounded. If they do have an injury that keeps them from being released back into the wild, they have a home for life there.
I will pray the little dove will be alright. BTW, since you held the dove, they are sooooo soft aren't they? I just love my backyard doves, I love the coo noise they make:)

Because back yard birding is what got me into this "mess" in the first place, :D, I looked for and found a wild life rehabber in my area a couple of years ago. It's nearly impossible (and illegal) to care for a wild bird unless you are a licensed rehabber so I was very happy to find and get to know, Casey, my wild bird rehabber. She has some great stories! She's cared for and released hundreds of birds at great expense to her pocket-book. Just does it for the love of all the wild ones.
My son asked me the other day if I still cared about my wild birds....:lol.....of course I do. I enjoy feeding and watching them every day! Heck, if not for my Bluebirds, I never would have thought of having a pet bird, aka, OLIVER! :)

Lori, that was a great uplifting story about the sparrow. Nice that he touched your heart as well as the grip on you finger...like a thank you..before flying off.
We have wild turkeys on one of our properties and a bulldozer ran over one of the nests breaking several eggs. A hen will not return to a damaged nest...so I ended up with the eggs in an incubator. After checking with our wildlife agents, I found out I could go ahead and hatch the eggs and could only release the wild birds on our properties. Out of 7 eggs, 4 hatched. Three birds were released when 7 months old. ..a jake and two hens. It was a learning experience teaching them what wild foods were acceptable. Many walks in the pastures and woods...what a real trip. Don't believe any of the stories that the turkey is a dumb bird!! One of the turkeys is blind in one eye and has a crippled foot so Tom is cohabitating with my flock of chickens and doing great.

Lori, you sure are a special person to go out and give that little sparrow a warm loving place to peacefully spend his last moments or thankfully in this case a loving place to find his wings again. Your story really touched me because i know that so many people in this world would not have given that bird the time of day and let him die on the ground without a second thought. Thank you for sharing your story. I am sure that little sparrow will always have a special place in your heart and i am sure you will have a special place in his. :) :) :)

:grouphug: to Lori.
aww that reminds me of the little bluet^t chick i rescued last year when i 1st moved into the rabbit hutch. (oh btw i still cant message u  )
Am hoping they start nesting again this year. This time they and other birds that soon be nesting will be having fur-lined nests to cuddle into. :D Cats loosing winter coats so be saving up their fur for the Birds.
On the note of windows, in my front room a whole wall is nothing but windows and a patio doors. This is a great risk for birds who may fly into the glass thinking its a clear run. So what i have done is to put a window Transfer and a wind chime (frog.) in the window so the birds dont smash into them. They tend to do it more when the sun is out and low.
i got pair of Ruddy wood pidgeons that will walk right up to patio steps not realising that errr "Thats err Glass and there are Cats behind it.!! " 2 oldest wont hurt them as they been brought up with birds. but Kitten cat will.
they only fly away if they see me move about or 1 of my boys have spotted them. then sometimes they dont move. Dumb Birds. (sheesh.)
aw Lori just think, he/she be having a family soon.
love a happy ending.
Hugs and love to all.
cassy.
