How much louder are Green Cheeked Conures than Lovebirds? I've heard/read that they're the least noisiest/high pitched 'screaming' of the conures, but I would like to know just how quiet they are. And if you have a GCC, tell me a little about them, and how they differ from your lovies. :)

My avatar is a pic of our GCC, Abbey. She's a DNAe'd female and her hatchday is June 10.
Overall, she's MUCH quieter than my lovebirds, but I do have to warn you, GCC's have a SQUAWK that will give you a migraine!! She only makes this sound at night, and it's a contact "don't leave me" call. She might sound off for 10 mins or so, then all is quiet. Her daytime chatter consists of chirps, whistles and general twortling. She's learned to make a purrrrrr sound like our cats, she barks at the doorbell, and she laughs like me:confused: Go figure. Caa Caa Caa!!! It's actually hilarious, and hubby laughs with her. She imitates the microwave beep and she's lately been saying what we think is "whaat?".
While no parrot is "quiet" in the true sense, I'd have to say GCC's are definitely less noisy than lovebirds.
Hope this helps you!
K

Lisa,

I agree with Kim, my GCC in quieter on average than my lovies, although Cappie does like to chatter with them at times.

The loudest he gets is the "don't leave me" call that Kim mentioned, but he usually only does this for a minute, so I'm guessing it depends upon the bird.

The one thing I will tell you that seems to be true for GCC's is that they can go through nippy stages, but then again, lovies do that too:rolleyes:

Overall, I think GCC's are awesome little parrots, and would recommend them to anyone looking to upsize from a lovebird. They are for the most part quiet, not very messy, very loving, and they just crack me up. Cappie can say "I love you", "Thank you", and he also says "What". These are things I say to him all the time, so he picked them up. I don't really know their capacity for vocabulary, but those three things he says very well:)

My Olivia sounds like a Conure. No kidding. Does that count? :lol

Heheh.

I would love to have a green cheek, but if they even occasionally produce sounds that can induce migraines, I don't think the rest of my household would appreciate that! I've never actually heard one sing normally, either, so I was just curious. But we'll see. Thanks for the info, guys. :)

I don't find Green Cheeks noisy at all. My pair very rarely make a sound, usually only once a day and it only lasts a minute or two. Compared to Lovies, the Green Cheeks are probably the quietest birds imaginable. Or, maybe it is just because i have Ringnecks inside and Sun Conures outside my bedroom window:rolleyes:
But seriously, i don't find them loud at all, they occasionally make a sound but not enough to give you a migraine, it isn't a high pitched scream like Lovebirds make

I am curious..... Do those of you that have other birds besides love birds let them all play together? Can they all get along?

Just wondering, not planing on adding a different species at this time but maybe in the future...................

Well, one of my female lovebirds really gets along with the budgies at play time, although they are still watched closely. The other three lovies I don't really trust around the budgies yet, as they can be somewhat mean (in fact, the two newer lovies are mean to everyone, but that is expected, for now). Although I do let the different species play together, I would never, ever house them together.

I'm wanting a Green Cheek too! ( gotta replace my truck windsheild first... )
They're so cute! The vocalizations I've heard aren't as loud as my lovie can be. Mikey can be heard before you get to my apartment door.

Green Cheeks are in a different group of Conures, not like Suns or Jendays. The group they are classified in are quieter than Suns, Jendays, Half-moons and Cherryheaded conures.
I've seen a *Sunday Conure... ( A mix between a Sun and a Jenday ). It screamed it's little head off for me. That was too much for my little ears to bare.

Yeah, they're part of the smaller conure genus, Pyrrhura. I've heard a Sun Conure scream, and it is NOT pretty. Peronally, I'd be willing to listen to it if I lived by myself or with people who didn't mind, but that's not the case.

Green Cheeks are really cute, and I'd love to have one. I even have a suitable cage at the moment.

I have a cage set up for a Green Cheek too! I live with my fiance and a two year old daughter. My Fiance and Mikey don't mesh well. ( I think it's jealousy, personally ).
I'm finding myself buying toys for a baby Green Cheek that I don't have. :D I'm always like this. Anyway, I live in an apartment and Green Cheeks have been recommended for apartment living.

There was also one other species I was interested in before I commited to the Green Cheek. It's the Lineolated Parakeet. Not many people breed them in Georgia. I've only found one so far.

I have a Zebra finch trio, Snap. Crackle. Pop. ( there maybe more to come soon ). Mikey will chatter to them when he hears them from my bedroom. Mikey fluffs himself up when he sees other birds... I don't believe I'd ever let Mikey be around any other birds. I'm afraid there would be a fight. :(

Heh, Mikey does sound like he gets pretty jealous! Have to introduce him slowly!

Yeah, I've stopped myself from buying larger parrot toys, on quite a few occassions. I've wanted a green cheek for a long time (a sun conure, grey, and blue and gold macaw for even longer!), and since they're supposed to be the most quiet of conures, I figured that'd go best in my household, for now. If they don't produce as high pitched a scream as a lovie (as Jezz has said) then I'll definitely be getting one. :D

I have two Meyer's parrots and they are pretty quiet and even tempered birds. Their chirps are really high pitched so they don't hurt the ears and they don't chirp much at all. Mine are not all that rambunctious either and I would recommend them for people who want sweet quiet birds though they are bigger than a GCC.

This is such an interesting question. I don't have a GCC, but I do have two parakeet species. A quaker and a mustache (in addition to my four lovies). It's something I haven't thought often about, but now that I do - the lovies are MUCH higher pitched and "shrieky" than the big parakeets. In fact, I used to think I wanted a houseful of lovies, but after having six (we rehomed two) I have decided that bigger is better. lol.

Even though Gunther (the quaker) may squawk occasionally it is nothing compared to the noise the four lovies make in the other room. Whew!

I have yet to hear how loud the mustache (Tonks) can get because we just got her Thursday, but I have a feeling she's got a BIG voice. Not the high pitched type of the lovies though. Why anyone would say they are apartment birds is beyond me... Well, maybe if you have just one. Those of us who treat them like chips (you can't have just one) know better. ;)
