Finny and I are so excited! Our new baby (not a baby age wise) is coming this week either on Wednesday or Friday! We finally found exactly what we were looking for and she just had her dna test. So she will be flying here this week (on a plane of course).

She is absolutely beautiful and we cant wait until she gets here so that after the seperation period her and Finny can fall in love and live happily ever after!

I will be sure (try and stop me..lol) to post pictures when she gets here. She is so pretty I hope Finny does not fall of his perch or act like a dope..lol

I know I should keep them seperated for a month before they have any physical contact but how long should I wait before I can put them in seperate cages in the same room??

Anyway... I just could not wait to share our happy news!

Congratulations! I look forward to seeing the pictures and getting regular updates on their progress. It sounds exciting!!! :)

As far as sharing the same room, you really should keep them completely seperated for a full 30 days, before allowing them access to the same room. It is for the safety of your lovies. You really want to make sure everything is A-OK.

Congratulations again!!!

Congratulations from me too! I understand a little of how you must feel because I'm waiting for a new birdie for my single lovie too :). Please do post pictures of your hen when she arrives. I think I read somewhere that she'll be a Milo birdie?

Good luck with the trip and the quarantine period :).

Hugs,
Gloria

Cindy, congratulations!!!! :D I can't wait to see photos!

Yes, you need to keep them completely separated for at least 30 days....different cages and different rooms. When I added two more, first thing I did was get a complete vet check done on both and then moved them into my older lovies bed-time room where they could be closed off completely from Oliver (my older lovie). This was for Oliver's protection. I knew that the new babies would be exposed to Oliver's space but that was not a concern since he's had regular vet checks and is healthy. I moved Oliver downstairs and his bedtime cage was in the downstairs guest bedroom and his larger day cage in the kitchen or family room. Oliver is a shoulder birdie and it was hard, putting him in a cage so that I could sneak away and spend time with Big Boi and Shy in their quarantine room. I kept a robe in that room that was easy to slip on and off so that Oliver would not come in contact with any clothing they had been on. I also washed my hands every time I touched them before touching Oliver again. I was not nearly as cautious about giving them his germs as I was in not giving Oliver their germs. I did buy from a reputable breeder but still was relieved when all the vet test (blood work, etc.) came back as normal. Quarantine, IMHO, is the hardest part when adding a new bird but the time does pass! After your 30 days (and I really do recommend that you take the new bird to the vet immediately after you get it) then you can put both cages in the same room and see how the bonding goes from there. The first time I let my three get together I was scared to death! :D Oliver doesn't exactly like them but he does tolerate them. :D

Yes she is a "Milo" birdie. From the picture I have seen of her she is exactly what I wanted. Truth be known she could show up and be pink and I would not care.lol We have waited a while for the day to come when we tried to get a good companion for Finny. After our unfortunate incident with petsmart, we were very leary, but now we are all just so happy to be getting a new birdie!

I am actually looking forward to the seperation period as it will give me time to bond alone with our new birdie.

The only thing I am actually worried about is her flight out here. I myself am afraid of flying and worry when anyone flies. I am also worried about the temperature and her getting to cold in the airplane. But, the breeder assures me all will be fine that she has done this many times, so I will take her word.

If all goes well I will have pics posted this week.

Congrats! I know how excited you are. :)

Yep, thirty days should be the minimum quarantine time. Separate cages, in separate rooms. After the thirty days are up and everything seems to be all right, you can put the new birds' cage next to Finny's, which will help them to bond. You can also start carefully supervised playtime. Once you notice that the two are preening each other, there isn't fighting, and just generally enjoy being together, you can try housing them in the same cage. This may take a long period of time. It's never best to rush this, as you can end up with a hurt birdie. Just let them take their time and have fun!

Cindy,
Where is Finny's GF coming from? Where does the flight originate? Make sure the breeder/seller gives you a tracking number for the shipment so that you can follow the flight. I ship Continental Quick Pak and they do a wonderful job! Even so, I track my shipments just to make sure that nothing happens. If the airline knows you are paying attention, they will, too!

Cindy, I can't wait to see the new addition to the family as well. Yes, like Linda said, you should be able to get tracking information for the flight your little purple bird will be on. Most good breeders account for delays and should have water (generally in the form of a small "vial-like"feeder on the side of the inner cage) and/or apple or celery (also for moisture) and very many also send a sprig of millet along too for the ride.
The lovebird will probably enjoy a quieter and less eventful flight than most of us humans.

I have been very happy with this breeder, I am confident that she will do everything to make sure our new lovie is safe and secure for her flight. She has been great in providing information and has just made this a great experience. As most of you know Finny is a pet store lovie that was bought as a wild birdie, so I had zero info on him when he came home with us. Working with someone that shares information and obviously truely cares about their birds has been a delight.

Her and I also were able to find a non-stop flight (although it was not my airport of choice) which makes me feel better about the whole moving her in and out of the weather thing, as well as the length of time she will actaully be in the air etc. Plus this may be my way to get my hubby to take me to my favorite bistro in Washington DC to kill time while we wait for the flight hehehe.

I will be sure to mention your suggestions to her before she ships Evie (short for Aoibheann which is pronounced Eve-een)(it means pleasant, beautiful sheen, of radiant beauty).

I am seriously like a child at christmas right now, I just can't waaaaiittt!!!!

(*squeal*) A Milo birdy!! Oh, how I want a Milo birdie  or two :p I wonder what will happen at the birdfair on Saturday  I can't wait to see pictures of Finny's new GF. I bet she's gorgeous. :D

I am so glad she got a non-stop flight for you. I am sure Evie will arrive in good shape, though after a cost to coast flight, she'll probably be ready to get out of the carrier. I know I'm pretty restless after a long flight.

Let's see if Jackie can resist the "darkside" this weekend. ;)

Oh Cindy,

Gloria's going to set you up with a gorgeous little hen. She is very pretty. I'm sure you'll get her pedigree along with her, but make sure to ask if she's been vaccinated for Polyoma. If she has, when she goes to the vet she will test positive for it and if you don't tell the vet she's been vaccinated, they might freak out a bit. She should come with a certificate of vaccination if she was. Evie also appears to have two legbands...which means her parents may have been from both Gloria and her "partner" of sorts in Alaska that share breeders. Eric (Keltoth) also has some birds from I believe it's Lisa, in Alaska.
Can't wait for more pics and I'm sure you'll be very excited until that plane lands!

Hmmmmmm. D.C. isn't that far from here. I might have to intercept that plane. What did you say the flight number was again?

I aint tellling!!!!

Thank you all so much for your nice comments on Evie. I just got back from the store buying her some new toys for her cage that is to be all hers when she gets here. I hope Finny does not mind that she will be crashing in one of his three cages (spoiled bird). I can almost imagine the looks on my dogs faces when I bring her home .. "awww mom not another toy that we can't play with".

I think Finny can sense that something is going on, he has been practising his "hey baby" all day and is full of energy. He was wrestling with his ball in the bottom of his cage today, I wanted to get video so bad but this bugger is such a ham the minute he sees the camera he just stops and poses and the ball is forgotten.

Cindy,
You've chosen a very reputable breeder to work with. She has some gorgeous lovebirds and I'm sure you will be very satisfied with Finny's GF! The photo is very nice but I'm not sure it does her justice. :)

I will keep you all updated on Evies arrival.

LOL I have an Evie. But she is not a lovebird. My 8yr old is named Eva but we call her Evie sometimes. Will have to tell her I know a bird or two with her name now.

 My Olivia does this with her ball that has a bell in it. If that ball was a living thing, it wouldn't it be anymore. Man, she beats that thing up. It's too funny! I want a video of her doing this too.
