I'm allergic to nuts. Not peanuts (they are legumes), but walnuts, pecans, brazil, almonds, macadamia and flax seeds.

Oh dear. I never thought about this. We've had our canary, Itzak for 3 years and feeding him seed has never been a problem. Suddenly, we have 2 lovies and I'm giving them mixes of this and mixes of that, and I've got runny, itchy, puffy eyes.

Poppa brought home a new mix with dried fruits and veggies last week and the lovies LOVE it! I went to the bird store today to find out what was in it, and started reading the ingredients on everything designed for lovies. Nuts nuts nuts.

Can I make my own mix with dried fruits and veggies? Can I find a standard seed mix without nut meal in it?

Does ANYONE else have allergy problems? I had to go to the doctor today to try out a different kind of antihistimine and it's barely working.

I'm not sure about seed mixes but Lafeber's avi-cakes don't have any nuts in them and the nutriberries (at least the el-paso, tropical fruit and sunny orchard that I have here) only have peanuts in them.

Oh good! I have both of those. I'll make sure they get a little more of that and hopefully they miss the other.

There are some pet stores, at least up here in Michigan, that will let a person create their own blend from several bins. Maybe you could find a store in Texas with a similar feature.

Hi,
I have ordered food from Avian Naturals for years. I know the woman that runs that online store will adjust the mixes for you (she's great). You can see on their website a complete listing of the ingredients. The food I use is Just Say No (to dyes, preservatives, etc). I don't recall nuts in the mix for tiels and lovebirds.
For birds she even has an allergy mix!

Good luck!

GREAT news about Avian Naturals. I go snoop around their website.

Also, we do have a good Bird Store in Austin. The owner is called "The Bird Lady" and she's very helpful. It's very near my doctor's office and I went by there on Tuesday. I'm going back today after seeing the doc again about the allergies.

I was glad to see canary seed mixes can be used for Lovebirds. Then I can just add some dried veggie and fruit to make it similar to the mix they love.

Still itching and tearing up, but no longer look like I have Pinkeye! :lol
