I received a very sad email yesterday morning from Katy letting me know that she was not able to take Cash and Fiesta to her new place with her. I had discussed with her the possibility of my superintendent’s son taking one. Unfortunately, due to big differences in our schedule, we weren’t able to get together to get the re-homing process started.

When I received that email yesterday morning, she was asking if they might be interested in taking both. I discussed this with my husband stressing out the time issue and the birds not having a home as of September first.

Some of you may remember how much of sucker he is for anything in need. We discussed the possibility to keep one until we would be able to re home it. I was pretty confident that I could talk a few people into adopting the remaining lovebird. My husband agreed and bluntly told me that we were NOT keeping that lovebird and it would be a TEMPORARY situation. I quickly returned his lie to with a “Yes dear, I know and I fully understand.”

We made arrangements with Katy to pick up the birds yesterday morning. I told her that one of them already has a good home lined up with Matthew and I would keep the other one at home until I am able to find a good home for it.

When we left Katy, I saw someone struggling with this decision that she didn’t want to have to make. Her big wet eyes absolutely broke my heart, and my husband. We both had tears in our eyes as we drove home.

I would like for Katy to know that sometimes we have to make hard decisions but somehow, it turns out for the best. You see, once we got home, we went to the office, spoke to Carroll, Matthew’s mother and asked for Matthew to come over to our place. Carroll’s husband came along with him. Matthew absolutely fell in love with Cash and Fiesta. After a lot of agitation, Cash settled on Matthew’s shoulder, preening his hair, fluffing up and beak grinding. Fiesta, on the other hand, settled on James. James was absolutely smitten by Fiesta. When Carroll was able to join us, she absolutely adored both of them.

You could see the struggle in Matthew’s face. He could not make a decision on which one to take home with him. Matthew has a lot of health issues and is always at home. He has many pets that are so well taken care of. He is very gentle, has a lot of patience and is very dedicated to the animals that he takes in his home. He understands that a lovebird is a lot of work. He was unsure if he would be able to take care of both. One was not an issue.

That is the moment I actually witnessed someone fall into the Dark Side. James looked up at him and said:” It won’t be too much work if I help you look after one.” Decision made, Cash and Fiesta are going to a new home together.

They stayed at our place for a good two hours socializing with Cash and Fiesta. It gave my husband and me an opportunity to see how comfortable the humans are with the birds and how comfortable the lovebirds are with their new slaves.

We walked everyone home (down the hall from us) and gave them an opportunity to settle down. At the end of the day, Danny and I dropped by to see how everyone is doing. The birds are settled in the living room. Fiesta was socializing with every one and making contact calls with the people. All the events of the day got to Cash a little more. She was cuddled on top of her happy hut, dozing off. Carroll mentioned that she was quieter then Fiesta. I suggested that they offer some millet, since it’s a treat. Well, it didn’t take one minute that Cash was as awake as Fiesta and chomping that millet down.

The entire family went down to the pet store earlier yesterday and got a big huge cage for Fiesta since hers was a lot smaller then Cash. I have to say that she looked very proud in that big brand new cage!

I know that these two babies found a wonderful new home and they will be spoiled rotten. The rabbit and the dragon lizard told us so. And the hamster confirmed it. It’s a real good home to be in. Everyone will be spoiled rotten with lots of time out the cage. I hope that Katy will know that her as much as her decision was heart breaking yesterday, she has made three people very very happy. Katy made the right decision and because of her, the right thing happened.

P.S: Katy, we have an open door policy with Matthew and James. If for any reason they can't keep one or change their mind, Danny and I will be taking them back. They won't be travelling from one home to another.

Elle,
Thank you so very much for posting this touching update! Finding good, loving homes for any bird is not always an easy thing to do and it's wonderful thing that you've done for these 2. There are so many birds in bad situations and more being added to the birdies in need of good homes simply because people don't think before they act. To bring an animal/bird companion into your home should be a lifetime commitment but too many people just don't know how to do that anymore.

I'm very glad that Cash and Fiesta have found a good, forever home/family to be with so that they are safe and cared for for the rest of their lives. I know Katy will miss them terribly, just as any good lovie owner would do. She did the very best thing for them and I'm very glad that things worked out the way they did.

Elle, bless your heart and your hubby's, too! :)

I had no idea Katy was going to re-home her birds and while it's a hard thing for me to swallow, I do know that in many cases it is unavoidable. And, if Oliver's former owner had not decided to give him up, I would not have him so I do know that it can be a very good thing! :D It sounds to me like you have found both Cash and Fiesta a wonderful home and family who will give them a forever home.

Katy, if you're reading, I want to add that I'm so happy you and Elle were able to get together on this. I know you'll miss them but that it is a good feeling for you, knowing they are in a good place and could be kept together. :)

Aww...another happy ending! I'm so glad they are able to stay together. Thanks for sharing that story. I'm sure it was very hard for Katy to have to rehome them, but it will probably make it easier for her knowing that they will remain together.

Elle,

You & your hubby are just too good to be true :grouphug1 First Phoebe and now Cash & Fiesta. What a perfect store of love for our feathered friends.

Katy, Like the others have said, I know this was a hard decision for you, but it turned out to be a good one. Don't be a stranger just because you don't have Cash & Fiesta :)

I see James and Carrol on a regular basis and every day, when I walk by their appartment, I can hear Tango and Cash chirping. I also see them occasionaly when they need a wing clip. They are doing well, are looked after very well and very much loved :)
