Lovebirds do tend to have a high-pitched, shrill call. One of my lovies, Razzle, likes to do this when he is on my shoulder. Honest to god, and I am not exaggerating, some days he leaves my ears ringing. The only thing I have found to get him (or my other lovies) to stop, is to try and distract him with a toy. If he is busy playing, he is pretty quiet. But then again, I have four, and sometimes when one starts, they all get going, and then the only thing you can really do about it is get earplugs! :D

some days he leaves my ringing. Happens quite a lot around here, too. :D

Sometimes they get loud when they want something, like food. Our whole flock really takes it up a notch when it's time for birdy bread. As soon as they are fed, they settle down. (Hard to scream with your beak full of food. ;))

Sometimes they will settle down if I go into the room and do something for them, like change water dishes or adjust the window shades every so slightly. Sometimes they will settle down if I simply call back to them. Calling back usually makes me feel better anyway. :) They don't care how loud *I* get. It's all part of the fun. :D

Unlike dogs, you can't really train them not to bark. (Can you even train a dog not to do this?) Birds sing when they are happy. For lovies, sometimes the "singing" leaves a bit to be desired.

If they are starting up earlier than you want to wake up, do as Christine says. Get some earplugs. Works for me! :)

Best wishes,

My only suggestion is, when your bird is obviously screaming for attention, try to resist the temptation to go rushing up to let her out.

I'm speaking from experience here.

My Melody, when she wants out of her cage, makes The Most Obnoxious Noise Ever: the "car alarm" chirp. Goes something like "SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH! SCREECH!" and it goes on for what feels like weeks.

You want to know how many times it took to reinforce this bad behavior? Once. That's right. I went running up to the cage ONCE, and now she does it all the time. :x

And how long has this been going on?

All four of mine do this too. I don't let them out everytime, but I do talk to them and they seem to quiet down a bit. I just love to hear them, but I think I'm saying this cause it's better than hearing a very spoiled ;) B&G Macaw do it  I'll take my lovies :p
