I just have a couple of questions. First questions, Kiley is always chewing on his foot is that ok? and I want him to start getting use to me getting him out of the cage without grabbing him. He comes out by himself, but I cant get him out on my own. Is there some thing I can do to get him to come out with out being totally scared. BTW I've only had him for two months.
Thanks for your help

I can't help I'm afraid but just to let you know my 2 are the same. I don't think we'll ever tame them, they talk to us but won't come near us.
Both mine chew their feet but I think its more chewing their foot band.
We've had ours since June and I think they're about 8 months old now.

What we perceive as chewing on the feet is actually them cleaning their feet. Unless you see any noticeable injury, I would guess that to be what Kiley is doing.

To get Kiley out, try using an extra perch for him to step up onto instead of reaching in to get him. Once you have him out, take him to another room so that his cage is not in view. Birds view their cages as safe spots, well, that is until they become spoiled rotten and never want to go back in it:rolleyes:

Once you have taken him to another room, just let him explore. Do make sure the room is birdie safe, ie no places/cracks he can get into, no mirrors uncovered, and if the bathroom, toilet closed. Birdies tend to fly to the bird in the mirror, and they can hurt themselves that way.

Just spending time with Kiley is the way to gain his trust. Talk to him, offer an arm to step up to rather than a hand, as hands take some time for them to trust sometimes. After each session, give Kiley a treat when putting him back into the cage, and praise him highly in excited tones for being such a "good boy".

Take is slow, but be consistent, and all that love and patience will pay off:)

Taming is a long and winding road and I'm still on it myself with my 3-year-old female. Hang in there and be sure to read the topics on this subject in the Lovebird Resource Library (third item down on Lovebirds Plus Community page). I still have moments of frustration, as does Nip, but overall the suggestions I found there are helping Nip and I a lot. ;)
