I had to share this story of how Cooper, my 5 month old lovebird, has recenlty amazed me with his inteligence. The 1st couple times he did it I thought it was a fluke but over the weeks it's become a consistant behavior. I think you fellow bird junkies will appreciate this story...

For those of you who don't know i'm a 1st time bird owner. I've had my blue masked lovie named Cooper for a month. Being a 1st time bird owner I am surprised everyday by the inteligence of these tiny parrots. The past month has been a challenge for me and Cooper, not only cause Cooper likes to bite but because I'm disabled and confined to a wheelchair and Cooper can literally get where I can't reach him at times. Cooper is an adventurous lil bird and likes to fly ( or try to fly , his wings are clipped) off his cage. This usually results in him over shooting for his target landing strip (me or a near by chair) and him plopping to the floor. Luckily the floor is too big and scarey for Cooper so when he lands in this forbidden place he quickly makes his way to the bottom shelf of one of my bookcases and waits there to be rescued. The 1st time he did this I was unsure how to retrieve him as I can't reach that low. I wheeled over to the shelf to try and figure out what I was going to do. Cooper begain to bob his head in aticipation of being rescued. Imagine my surprise when the lil squirt hopped onto my foot rest before I could figure out a rescue plan! He then promptly climbed his way up my pant leg to my lap. I was amazed but skeptical he would ever do it again. WRONG! Somehow Cooper can sense my limited ability and now uses this technique to calmly and quietly make his way back up to mommies lap when his adventures take him out of reach. He only does this with me, the rest of the world he insists on coming to retrieve him with a perch. I find this lil trick of his amazing and his insight and understanding of my abilities (especially after only a month together) is a true testiment as to the inteligence of these lil birds. yay for Cooper!

Teri,

That is a very heartwarming story. I think animals have an inner sense of our moods, and limitations. I suffer from cluster headaches, and amazingly, they seem to know when I'm in pain, and they are quieter.

It is wonderful that Cooper can sense what you call limitations, and he has adapted to eliminate that one:)

I have a dog at home living with my parents (she's not allowed in my apartment  ) that has taught me to roll up to the arm of a loveseat so she can step across into my lap and enjoy some snuggles. The 1st time Cooper put himself back in my lap from the floor it brought tears of joy to my eyes. How wonderful it is that your birds are equally thoughtful of you in your time of pain. If only humans could master the considerateness these tiny creatures show the world would be a much better place.

Dowel training would also be great in your situation. That way you can always have an extra reach to rescue him in places you can't get once he becomes more adventurous.

Animals are so in tuned to us. I agree with the dowel thing as he gets some where and you cant reach .. a dowel would be a good tool. Go Cooper...

Since cooper is afraid of hands at the moment I am training him to step up onto a dowel and he's doing quite well. He picks things up fast! My family are amazed at the progress that he's made since they 1st met him. He's the 1st bird in the family and he's impressing everyone! Thanks again for the advice any other helpful hints are always welcome.

p.s. Cooper hid out in my shirt for the first time last night. It was quite possibly one of the sweetest things I've ever seen!

i am costantly amazed at what our lovies can do - Cooper sounds like an angel, who was meant to find you. Give him an extra lovie hug and snuggle from me.
