Chris, I don't know nothing about birthing babies but I don't think you are supposed to use any kind of deodorizer in or around their cages. I could be wrong and maybe this is something specifically made for parrots? Someone else will hopefully have information about that for you. In the meantime, I'd remove the one you have and not replace it till someone can assure you it is safe for your birds. Room deodorizers, sprays, scented candles, etc. are not safe for birds, even in a different room. The fumes can reach them and their respiratory systems can't take it.
Why type of deodorizer is it and where did you get it?

:lol! I almost referenced GWTW (short for you know what) a movie I think I've seen over 20 times. I wanted to smack the life right out of her when she bragged about birthin' babies and then told Scarlet she couldn't help! But, enough about that! :D
I still would not use that protecter until someone who knows about them can comment. I know that several things are sold as bird safe when they really aren't. If you know the brand, can you do an internet search on it?

Nope, don't be using birdie mite protectors around birdies at all SVP!
They're effective to kill mites, but they're just as effective as poisoning a birdie's respiratory system!!!!
Off with it and don't bother replacing it, birdies indoors rarely come in contact with mites anyway.
And, by the way, there's NO SUCH thing as a stupid question!!;)
We are all here to teach, learn, share experiences and knowledge.

Kimmie, I kept wondering WHY products like that are sold for birds???? It really is a shame that someone might buy it, as Chris did, assuming it's bird safe since it's sold for birds. I just don't get it!

Since this thead is already going I thought I would ask about scented candles in other rooms. We have a 2 story house and I was wondering if it is ok to have scented candles going in one room down stairs while the birdies are upstairs? I have not burned any candles at all since Finny came to live with us and I have to say I miss them, not to mention that I have tons of them that I hate seeing go to waste. Also if I have burned them in a room downstairs and then bring Finny and Reilly down to their downstairs cage how long should I wait after burning them?
Also since we moved back to Arizona we know in monsoon season we are going to lose power frequently. I have always use candles for light in this situation. Are there safe candles I can use when monsoon season hits?

Cindy,
I don't use candles, but I do use an electric tart burner. It's not near my birds, but in the back part of the house, so the scent is not strong toward the front.
I gave up soooooo many candles when I got my birds. I was a Partylite addict, and everyone got candles for the next year for whatever occasion came up. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone that I re-gifted:lol

Those mite protectors were created/manufactured YEARS ago...back into the 70's, when very little was known about domestic bird care.
The majority of the shops I've visited over the years do not carry them, but I've seen a a few "mom and pop" shops that still have them shelved.
If those business owners don't stay informed and updated on their products, they assume the protectors are still safe. All it takes it a bit of reasearch, but for the most part, ignorance is the main reason why they're still available. And hey, from a purely business point of view, if it makes the company money, why would they stop producing them?
Just like the bags/boxes of sand and grit that I see in cockatiel/parrot sections...not needed, likely dangerous, but again...very 'old school' if you know what I mean...
The best protection for your birdies' health is KNOWLEDGE.
Hope this explains things,
Kimmie

Cindy, I still do use one scented candle in my bedroom. It's upstairs and the birds are downstairs. I don't burn it often but I do burn it occasionally. Big Boi and Shy are never in that room and rarely, if ever, upstairs at all. Oliver is upstairs where the computer room is but not in my bedroom often.
Kimmie, thanks for that explanation as to why some unsafe products are still on the market.
Chris, just saw your comments about meeting Butterfly McQueen. Poor thing, I read that her later years weren't the best and I don't remember seeing her in anything but GWTW...need to do a google on that. Did you grow up near the city? My sister has lived there for 40 years and I do love to visit her when I can. Nothing quite like NY! :D

I'm on long island just outside the city janie. Lived in the city for awhile, then Queens, now own a house in Suffolk county. Yeah it was kinda sad meeting her like that. she actually had pre made slips of paper with her autograph on them, this is going back , like the late 70's early 80's . Kimmie those bird protecters are still being sold in Walmart(thats where i first saw them and Petland , where i thought they'd be in the know) Thats why i checked here, so glad I did. Hey a ps just got a call from home "Milo" the first baby wandered over to the veggies this morning and hit the broccli and carrots!

Chris,
It's great your babies are begining to poke around the veggies! Mine are crazy about carrots. :)
That's too bad about Miss Prissy, she was quite memorable in GWTW. I saw that once in the Fox Theater on Peachtree St. in Atlanta. I've seen the movie many times, but that was quite a setting!

Suzanne, nothing beats seeing GWTW at the Fox and I got to do that one time! It premiered there in 1939 I think. Yes, before my time! :lol
Chris, that is great news about Milo investigating and eating the veggies! You are getting them off to the right start so if and when they go to a new home, it will be a great transition for the new owner. My younger two came from a great breeder but she had so many babies that she didn't have time to introduce veggies. Luckily, they were curious from the start after I got them and were eating vegetables after the first week.

Janie, he seems to be playing first child with everything, first out first to perch first munchies. Tough being the oldest (I know lol) In addition to reg food I always leave veggies at the bottom of the cage, before i leave for work. Speaking of which i should get back to...have a great day everyone!

you can use non-scented candles with cotton wicks I'm pretty sure.
