View Full Version : Your Lovies.

Do we have a list of everyone's lovies? (and of course any other fids worth mentioning). I was just trying to remember who owned a bird and what the lovie's name was...I used the search, it just took me a while to find it. (It was Windy owned by Christine). I thought it may be a good idea to list our lovies, and their mutations (if we know them). My memory isn't the greatest, and I don't know an easier way than by having a list.

Chubby and Checkers :Whiteface American Dilute Violet
Kiko: Pied Seagreen
Touki: Pied Green
Little Chicken: Creamino
Mr.Peepers: Not Completely sure
Sampson: Regular Peachfaced Green
Delilah: Lutino
Dayzee: American Cinnamon Slate
Woogie: Edged Dilute American Cinnamon Slate
(I am butchering the terminology....it's just so darn confusing)

I know some have LOTS of lovies. I have been here a little over 6 months and remember some, but not enough lovies and their owners.

Dory-a spayed fawn colored chihuahua 12-12-99
Gabby-a spayed brown colored chihuahua 7-23-2005
Sassy-a neutred yellow spotted cat 6-25-2006
Smokey-a spayed gray/white cat 10-1996

Hey, R&JL, maybe short, but definately sweet. Wonder if this could be added as a field in our profiles that we update periodically via our control panel??? Perran, would you be the one do add something like this? Then we could make a sticky about the ***NEW FEATURE***. We've been boring Perran and Trixie lately, so maybe this would give him something to rock-n-roll over. As for me and my fids...

*Nip, blue black-masked hen, 2-1/2 years old
*Beau, blue black-masked male, 9 months old
*Sophie & Skylee, white-face Dutch blue hens (or Seagreen?), almost 4 months old
*Keeghan, white-face slate male, almost 8 months old (My lil Valentine - still lives in SLC with Eric, but we're working on that).

Hey, wait a minute. People are giving names of their other pets, so I don't want to leave out Jack (the now glaucomic:( ) Chihuahua, turning 11 next month, and Hank the part Whippet Hound Dawg, our May '99 tornado rescue, who is approximately 7 years old.

Gosh, MJ's list is longer than Linda's and LauraO's? Now THAT makes me tired!

I did not make it up Janie....I spend three to four hours a day feeding and snooping so I know them pretty well. :lol Tater and Tot used to be cage mates, until Scarlet moved in the room and Tater dissed tot for the little red head (literally) next door. It's ok though, cause Tot enjoys being hen-pecked by his new mate who I affectionately call "Big Mamma".

Tweety - dutch blue or seagreen (not sure about the factors)
Rupert - dutch blue or seagreen (same here about the factors, but he's a bit more of a seagreen color than Tweety). Maybe Eric can get me straight on their colors.
Three babies of Rupert and Tweety who have not been named yet - not sure about these dark factors and all that Eric mentioned in one of my posts, but I'll trust his expertise.

Sheba (11-year old Wirehaired Dachshund who loves the Lovies).
Spike (7-year old black Miniature Schnauzer who would love to get my Lovies so he is banned from their room).

I have 12 lovies and two conures:
They are comical and entertaining, loving and nippy...there is never a dull moment around here.

Mollie (DB) changes mates as often as she is allowed even choosing another female for a while. As the matriarch she is top feather and lets everybirdie know it. Right now she is paired with Snuggles (Seagreen Pied) and is sitting on four eggs. This will be her first clutch since last February. She will be three and he will be 1 in May.

Jazzy (Green Pied) and Wing (Cobalt AT Cinnamon) are a young couple. Their eggs weren't fertile this time, but he has been very attentive and I'm sure the next clutch will be successful. Wing surprised me by starting to lay at 9 months so I'm glad she gets to wait a while to raise a clutch.

Naranjo (Lutino/OF) and Sophia (Cinnamon SF Violet) have been attracted to each other from day one. She dropped Ponti as soon as she saw Naranjo. They currently are sitting on four eggs and she is a very good mommy and he is doting and attentive.

Puff (Turquoise SFV) and Midnight (Cobalt AT SF Violet) are in a group cage with two other hens. He grooms everybody and gets return attention. But he still sleeps side by side with Midnight. The hens are Sucre(NG) and Sunshine (Lutino) and they are sisters. They are two of Mollies daughter born Nov 05. With all the mutual grooming and feeding, I think Puff actually has a harem. They are happy for the moment but if any arguing starts, the two hens go in a separate cage!!

Lemon Zest (Lutino) and Quill (DB/?lutino) are a happy pair. She is a few months younger than he is but she outweighs him by several grams. Quill is Mollie's son from her Feb 06 clutch.

Then there are the Conures. Max and Maggie are 1.5 years old and are Halfmoon conures.

To round out the pet list:
There are Mauvis (17) and Murdock (3) the tuxedo kitties.
BW short for Black and White, long haired cat we inherited from my son-in-law while he is in the Navy.
Gracie, 4 year old Australia Shepard
Red, 4 month old adoptee that's part Catahoula, hound and birddog.
I won't list the cows...or chickens.....although they do have names.:lol

In the lovebird list, the birds are broken down into their current pairings. Ok, I realized after I posted my "list" on Friday, that many jaws would be hanging. Quite frankly, my own jaw hangs when I realize in a fairly short period of time, I've gone from 1 lovie to the madness we have now. It's a labor of love, but it's LABOR. It's not for the faint of heart and for someone that doesn't understand fully, that they are solely responsible for the little lives they bring into the world. It's also expensive and breeding lovebirds does not pay well. It can be a joy and it can be heartbreaking. People ask me all the time about breeding lovebirds and how they think they'd like to do it; not having a clue what they are getting into. I knew, somewhat, when I started, but it can steamroll quickly and you can be so lost. For instance, five hens all laying and sitting at once. Each successfully hatches lets say 4 chicks....that's 20 more lovebirds. On top of that, if they don't feed or pluck severely, you have to take on the role of parent. Sleep deprivation, not being able to go anywhere that involves being gone for more than 4 hours, having friends & family look at you like you are out of your mind because you are up at 2 a.m. feeding little dinosaur-looking creatures. Handfeeding itself is a task. If you don't do it right, you can kill the chick, quickly by aspirating it or slowly by not feeding at the right temp or too thick or watery. Then what do you do with the chicks once they are weaned?
$200+ a month on bird seed, $50 or so on veggies and fruit and imagine the hours cleaning. Yeah, it's ALOT of work. Then vet visits....the fun part. $60 minimum "Flock fee" and then individual tests $8-25 per piece, medicine is generally not too expensive, but if a bird gets sick and needs to stay at the vet. :omg: The last sick bird we had at the vet for a week, the bill was well over $1200; all for a $50 bird.
So I guess I'll quit preaching now, but if you are not breeding and are thinking about it; honestly, think twice or three times about it before you decide.

To answer the questions asked;

The Quakers have been there since last year. I believe I only posted pics of Santos & Savanna, but when the sun finally comes out here, I'll be able to take some pictures that can be seen. Odie, the pet Quaker was given to us by a lady who's husband said she had to get rid of him when he bit their Tiel's toe off.

There are three rooms designated for lovies at our house. The kitchen also doubles as a weaning room. The brooder(s) stay on the counter of needed and there are three weaning cages there. It's warm, bright and lots of traffic, so the little ones do well there.

I spend a lot time with them and get to know their personalities. I talk to each and every one every day, which helps in remembering who is who too.

Albinos do have red eyes. The mutation of the bird you saw is referred to as a Black-eyed Clearflight. They are either all white or all yellow with black eyes. Hope that helps. :)

Actually, I take that back. They are called black-eyed clears. (I looked it up; I wasn't sure if I was right, and wanted to be sure.) They are a cross between clearflights and recessive pieds.

Now I want to see an albino budgie. I was really taken by the black eyed clear. Of course I had to try and touch him and they all flocked to the other side of their, um....glass enclosure thing.

Do albino budgie's have red eyes? I saw a, what I thought to be, completely white budgie the other day, but she/he had black eyes.

Yes, my albino budgie has red eyes. All white with red eyes :)

Actually, I take that back. They are called black-eyed clears. (I looked it up; I wasn't sure if I was right, and wanted to be sure.) They are a cross between clearflights and recessive pieds.

Regardless, it must make for a striking bird :)
