A lot depends on the personalities of the birds involved but I would say no, don't plan on doing this. Parrotlets are the smallest parrot but think they are the size of a Hyacinth Macaw! Put that together with a lovebird and you are looking for tragedy.

Should the lovebird and parrotlet decide that they like each other and can get along, you might be able to do it, but it would have to be their decision rather than something that was planned.

Peanut, my Pacifica Parrotlet, was housed with 3 lovebird babies when I first got her. She was 3 weeks old at the time and everyone was fine together. However, as week 6 approached, Peanut ruled the roost and I finally had to separate her from her lovie companions.

I agree with Linda.

Like lovebirds, parrotlets think that they are FAR bigger than they really are. They also tend to be aggressive, another trait often associated with lovebirds. I've even read some horror stories involving same-species pairings (e.g. p-let w/ p-let or lovie w/ lovie) going wrong after years of peaceful co-habitation.

That said, a p-let could be a wonderful addition to your home. The are small and fairly quiet; from what I understand they are quieter than most lovebirds. You may be able to let a p-let interact w/ a lovebird under careful and constant supervision. Sometimes just having another creature to chatter with or look at makes another animal happier :)

Some of my favorite p-let sites: www.parrotletranch.com and www.littletweet.com

thanks guys for the helpful advice :)
I guess its a given that when you bring in just ONE bird into your house, he/she will quickly steal your heart, and you are soon looking into what other birds you can own. Its a vicious circle, isn't it? :P

before kiwi, i had a parrotlet, coco, a gorgeous female who i loved with all my heart. we would often babysit a friend's lovebird, and let them out together to play. they got along well, BUT the lovie landed one day on top of coco's cage, and she was furious with him. luckily i was right there, (i never left them alone together) so no one was hurt. coco was the sweetest bird, so it was a shock how aggressive she became.

we had coco for 1 1/2 years until by accident she escaped through an open door and although we searched was never found again.

parrotlets are small birds with BIG attitude. they are quiet, with the smallest little most adorable chirps. i often think of getting another one - as mentioned, i would let them decide if they wanted to interact, but would not house it together with kiwi, for both their safety.

They're so small I want a dozen!

I almost bought a pair of green pacifics at the bird store that used to be near my house. But they were only there for a week and were gone before I could talk myself into it, or was that not talk myself out of it. :(

Well, when I say I want one...I MEAN IT. I have already made a few inquiries, as they aren't in any of the places I know to get birds.

I won't be housing him/her (THEM) with my lovies, but they will be in the same area....supervised play time with the lovies may or may not happen. But I am getting ahead of myself.....
