Well....I regret to inform everyone that Marvin's DNA test came back. And for those of you who read my "HELP!" thread, you've probably guessed that 'he' is actually a 'she'.It really isn't a big deal, I love her all the same. I'm just a little worried about the nippyness that she's been displaying lately. HARD nippyness, which I heard is common among female lovies. My biggest concern though, is that if & when she lays eggs, apparently there are a lot of health concerns. Although I am sure there are many people here who will help me along through these times, I am concerned about her.
The lesser of my concerns though, is finding a new name. As much as I love the name Marvin, I just don't think it quite suits a female bird....any takes on names that may be CLOSE to Marvin??? hahaha....any suggestions are welcome, as of now, she remains a Marvin as it has kind of stuck after 4 weeks. BUT I will decide on another *hopefully shortly* and begin the process of engraving it in my mind *and hers!* Thanks everyone, for everything!!!

What about Marvina, you cant get closer than that. :lol
Or Marie, Marine, or just Plain Mar. (Mar also means spoilt or to spoil ;) )
And thats what we all do is to spoil our Fids.
Cassy.

Martina!!!!! Close, and I just love Martina McBrides voice, and I bet little Ms. Marvin has some good pipes too;)
I know you were a little disappointed with the DNA results, and the egg laying can be a concern, but most hens never have a problem, it just requires a little extra attention. I have a little hen, Lacey, who is just the sweetest thing ever, but when she has eggs, I just have to respect her space;)
The nippiness may be modified, and with Lacey, I just let her know the bite does not affect me. She's not a hard biter, so this is not so bad for me, but I just give her my finger, let her bite it, and then gently rub her beak with my thumb and forefinger. As I rub her beak, the bites get less aggressive.
I don't know if this will work for you, but try it. What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another, but I do believe that since her bites don't get a reaction from me, she calms down, and realizes that I'm not intimidating her, and she's not intimidating me:lol

Minerva! Or Martina. :) You could always call her "Marvelous Minny," or Marty, so you'd still be able to call her "Marv."
Madeline is a nice name too. :) Then she could be Marvelous Maddy.

:2cents: If your lovie answers/knows it's name by now, I'd leave it. I have a 2 1/2 yr old Lutino named Molly and he, yes he, knows and answers to his name. I never thought about changing it. I think as humans, we are the ones who dwell on this issue. Although I did consider changing the spelling of Molly's name to Maulie

My 17 yr old female Military Macaw is actually named George. She got the name before she was DNA sexed and that's the name she knows. Her alternate name is Georgia but I usually just use George. She's more comfortable with that. I'd stay with Marvin, as it's a nice name and I like it, too! :)

I agree with Lori. Egg binding can happen but it's not something that's a given with hens laying eggs. Since you know to look for it, you'll be on top of it and be able to give her the medical attention she needs immediately if necessary.
I'm with Step, I'd keep her name.....Marvin! :D I could never get my brain to accept/change one of my lovies names after calling them that for more than a week! :D I changed Oliver's name the day I adopted him but then again, I never knew him when he was "Giggles".....isn't that the worst name! But his former owner was only about 10 or 11 when she got him so I guess "Giggles" sounded pretty good to her. Her dog is named Oliver! :lol

I too have a hen with a very manly (and very nordic) name: Pontus. I don't like the name at all, but it was the one her former owner gave her and I really couldn't come up with anything feminine that would be remotely similar so in the end I just kept it. She doesn't seem to mind at all, but I do call her my princess (mi princesita in Spanish) as an endearment :).
Good luck whatever you decide with Marvin's name. And like other's mentioned, egg binding while a potential problem, is not by any means unavoidable. I'm sure you'll both do alright :). Enjoy your hen, they are a blast!

Hi!!!
We found out Peaches was a "he" and we kept the name. We tried calling him other names and he didn't respond. Peaches loves his name...lol ;)
I actually like the name Marvin!!! However, if you want to change, how about Marvy?? :D

Well..I tried "Meka" because I liked it...but I can't do it! I've had Marvin for a month, it's impossible to change his little name now...so. I've decided thanks to a few responses, Little Miss Marvin it is, Marvin for short! Thank you all for the input!!!
