Hi guys. Just found out that one of Jack's sisters died this morning. My brother-in-law gave her to a friend at the same time I got Flapjack. They are now 6 mos old. The guy seemed to really care, and listen to all we told him about what to do and not do with a bird in the house. Throughout the last 6 mos, my brother-in-law would notice little things, like toxic plants in the house, the bird landing in the dog food bowl, candles etc., and he would explain to the guy, to educate him, and though he said he would pay more attention, and we thought he had removed the dangers, he seemed to be a little on the defensive side.
This morning, Greg went to give the guy a ride to work, and he actually asked Greg to bring a syringe because "I don't think she's getting enough water and she hasn't eaten for awhile"! Prior to this, he never said anything to my brother-in-law that she was sick, and Greg was shocked when he got there. He raced the bird to the vet but she died in the car on the way.
My brother-in-law called me very upset, and I forgot to ask if he left Zelda at the vet for a necropsy, so I don't know how she died. I don't know why I'm posting such a depressing message, other than as a reminder that not everyone, no matter how much you try to help and guide them, really want to understand that our fids are not like cats or dogs, and that their little systems are much more sensitive. I'm thankful that I found all of you to help me along the way as Jack is my first experience (as an adult) with birds.

I am soo sorry to hear about little Zelda. The saddest part is this is not surprising. Bird ownership is often misunderstood and people just don't believe how sensative their little systems are.

Jeni,
I'm so very sorry to hear about Zelda!

Lack of education regarding birds is overwhelming and even worse are those that are given information and do nothing with it.

I know that the information here at Lovebirds Plus has helped a lot of those owned by lovies (and other birds). And I know that a lot of our members pass on what they learn. I just wish it could happen faster and those who feel what we have to say is frivolous would not have to get a wake up call the hard way. :(

Am so sorry to hear your sad news.
But sad fact is, some people just dont want to listen or learn, and its at the animals suffering that Sometimes These People finally Learn.(or in some cases, never learn. )
i have seen many other forums re lovebirds and other birds, but this 1 will always come out top, as none of the members, flock leaders, Preach to you on how to look after Fids ect. They all Guide you. Probably why, this site is No 1 in Google search.

Oh, that is such a shame... Cassy put it best: some people WILL NOT listen. Or worse: they'll smile and nod, all the while knowing that they will not be following through with the advice.

We can only hope that wee Zelda didn't suffer much :*( Take heart in knowing that your Flapjack is in a loving, caring home.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. All of Jack's siblings are great birds and such beautiful varied colors. The real sad thing is that Zelda just happened to be the most easy going sweetest personality of all. Such a shame to lose her. Although the guy obviously did things he shouldn't, in his way he really did love the bird and is very sad. My brother-in-law is worried that the guy may ask for one of the new chicks, and he doesn't want to hurt his friend, but you can be sure that he WILL NOT be getting one! Don't tell my husband, but I'm a little tempted though...>o
