Not many of these around, glad they decided to help the little one out...literally. http://www.oregonzoo.org/VideoArchive/CondorAssistHatch.htm

Very interesting MJ. I haven't heard to much about the California condor lately. Seems like they've been in trouble for quite some time now too. I was going to say how cute, but they remind me of my grandmother dressed in 1930's garb minus her wig!....Rest her soul.......Michael and Goofy

Fascinating, MJ, and thank you for sharing!
Just as with an assisted lovebird baby hatch, there are also certain "markers" for knowing when the chick needs help.

I've been watching the progress of the California Condor since 12 were brought here to Oregon as part of the California Condor recovery program. They have them is a remote location where they have very limited human contact and the public has no access. Six breeding pairs were sent here and the current population here is 16; however since 1982 when there were only 22 birds left in the world, there are now 289.

Yes, they are a rather "unattractive" bird, but then again, we can't all be supermodels. ;)
