Why Doesnt my new lovebird chirp?

I just got a new lovebird hes about two months old had him for a day and havent heard a peep from him, it looks like he tries but nothing comes out? Ish e sick? also he just goes to sleep while sitting there, my other love bird never let me see him sleep whats the deal?:confused:

I am relatively new to the boards, so some others may give better advice than I, but your bird is probably stressed since it is its first day at your house. Make sure he's eating and drinking within 24 hours, and that should signify that he is beginning to adapt.

My lovebird was the same age when I got him about 6 weeks ago. He didnt eat or drink until late the 2nd day, and he remained lethargic for about 2 days. Talk to him gently, and be sure not to stare at him, as it will make him feel as if you are a predator. Just spend a lot of time in the room with him reading a book or magazine aloud...just something to acquaint him with your voice.

If you dont see improvement by tomorrow evening (i.e. no eating or drinking) he may need to see a vet or be taken back to the breeder, as they can sometimes revert to needing handfeeding, but I suspect this is all normal behavior.

He's probably just settling in. If he is a lone bird in a new home, he won't chirp until he knows he is safe. That is what keeps birds safe in the wild, and their survival instincts are strong, even for domesticated birdies.

I agree that he is probably trying to protect himself by being quiet. It's what a lone bird would do in the wild; if you're quiet, a predator has a hard time finding you.

Where is his cage in the room? Most birds feel more safe if they have a wall close to one side. Corner placement, up high, is best.

Keep talking to him, even try chirping at him yourself. If he is healthy, he will chirp! And before long, you will wonder why he's so noisy. :D

When I brought Fenway home she did not make a sound for 2 days...I was thinking about how wrong the girl at the store was because she kept saying how loud Fenway got in the evening. Little did I know....:omg:
