I wanted to draw everyone's attention to a MEMO I received tonight from our Head Office (Pet Valu) The last item listed is the "8 in 1 Bird Protector" which many of you will recognize as the "mite protectors" commonly sold in stores, especially PetSmart etc.
Note the reason for the products' discontinued status :

NO LONGER APPROVED FOR IMPORT TO CANADA

I think that says enough about the product being DANGEROUS !!!!

Thought everyone should see this ... YOU ARE CAUTIONED !!

I haven't seen these or any mite protectors in the pet stores here in Winnipeg. When I went to North Dakota, Petsmart and Petco, they had a few different ones. I really wanted to take them off the shelf and accidently toss them in the garbage!!

Do birds get mites often? It is something I am NOT concerned about at all, am I being naive? Also, none of my dogs have ever had fleas....guess that is why I think the way I do.

House birds usually only get mites if they spend extended periods in their cages out of doors. They can catch them from sparrows or other birds that fly very close to the cage or land on top of the cage. It is quite rare.

Thanks Shy. I guess they are on the market so someone can make a buck, not because they are a requirement for all bird owners.....

My lovies had mites. Yes, I did leave them outside for much of the day with wild birds coming close by:omg: (This was in Hawaii where the weather is so nice that I just couldn't keep them inside!) A lesson here, perhaps.
