Thread: Bird Emptying seed Feeder

  1. #1

    Default Bird Emptying seed Feeder

Peach has a bad habit: I have a feeder attached to the cage so when Peach eats the seeds the other seeds drop down to fill the small feeding tray it's a clear plastic container so I can see when it needs refilling.
Problem is whenever I fill it she empties the whole lot at one go onto the cage floor and then eats the seed from there. Would I be better to put the seed into a dish and place it on the floor of the cage?

I suspect that if you were to place her food tray on the floor, she would continue to scatter it around anyways. .. As opposed to a feeder, have you ever tried just a covered food bowl? .. It may not stop her from flinging seeds, but may help slow her down a bit. ..And, it might be better than her emptying out a whole feeder full of seeds. ............

Michael many thanks for the suggestion this may sound silly but what do you mean by a covered food bowl?

    Thanks for the link Mummieeva
Cant believe this: that's a similar type of feeder and water feeder I have just now and once its filled she empties the feeder in no time at all. She has lots of toys etc too and I give her branches off the willow/ and paper which she strips and puts into her back feathers.
Guess its maybe just a bad habit she's developed.
Many thanks to you both for answering.

They make others that are more covered. But for some reason I could not find any links. They make a type that are Crock type that sit on ground and have a hood and only a small hole for the birds head.

Thanks for that explanation I'll have a look around to see what I can find its worth a try if (a new feeder works it will eventually pay for itself with the saving on the cost of the wasted seed)
